Fructose = Ethanol

I found this YouTube video a few days ago and was shocked when I watched it. Not that I didn't realize that high fructose corn syrup is bad for your health (there was the time that I gained 15 pounds in 8 weeks while sucking down soda and energy drinks on my first contract programming gig), but I never knew just how bad that stuff is for you.

In the video, Robert H. Lustig, MD, UCSF Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Endocrinology, explores the damage caused by sugary foods. He argues that fructose (too much) and fiber (not enough) appear to be cornerstones of the obesity epidemic through their effects on insulin.

I know that it is long, but if you have ever struggled with weight, or have been affected by diabetes, I think that the 90 minutes of your life is worth the knowledge gained.

Thailand - Take 2 (Temples)

This is a sweet picture I got of the top of this Buddhist temple (Doi Suthep) at dusk.

We arrived in Chiang Mai in the morning, which was nice because it gave us the whole day to explore the area.  We walked down one of the main streets to get to the wall surrounding the "Old City".  We came across a bunch of temples on our little excursion, which made sightseeing pretty easy.  I remember reading somewhere that there are over 700 temples (Hindu, Buddhist, Shinto) in Chiang Mai!  Obviously, we didn't make it to all of them because as my dear sister once said "I feel like you can only see so many temples and shrines before they all start looking the same".  These are just a few of the pictures we took as we walked through the city.  It is amazing how a busy street like this can contain so many beautiful buildings.

This is one of the few pictures I got of Trip that day...it was hard to wrestle the camera away from him!  He took a ton of amazing pictures.

Yes, that is me sitting there with terrible posture!  It had been a long day; it was nice to just sit.

I really like the dimension of this picture.  It gives you a glimpse of the whole Chinese shrine area.

It should come as no surprise to anyone that Mumsie and Dad did a whole lot of this  :)

Probably the most random thing I have seen so far.  Not sure why Donald Duck is eating noodles in the garden at this temple...how could we not share this?!

There were so many beautiful buildings and interesting things to see.  We definitely saw a lot more than I am sharing, but these pictures give a good taste of the feel of the city.  It is a pretty typical busy Asian city, but then just off the beaten path you find some amazing areas and cozy little shops and corners and suddenly it doesn't feel so busy anymore.  After all the walking, picture taking, and ogling of sights, we did finally make it to the Old City wall.

After eating lunch in the Old City we went back to the guesthouse to take naps.  We opted to find transportation on the way back...

 This is not a famous Tuk Tuk (which we never actually rode).  This is a taxi and as you can see, the back has no form of door and the roof has handles so you can brace yourself when they turn...

It was pretty exciting!  We will post about the other awesome parts of our Thailand vacation in the next few days.

Thailand - Take 1

Happy Easter!!  As promised, I have started to upload pictures of Thailand.  Since it is taking so long for the pictures to upload and there are so many good ones that we want to share, we will do several short posts about Thailand instead of one long post.  Here are just a few pictures of the beautiful teak hut that we stayed in while we were there.  It was such a nice hostel and we all enjoyed ourselves thoroughly.  We look forward to going back sometime soon!
